Banoffee Pie

110 mins Serves 12

Ingredients

Base:

100g (3½oz) butter, melted

250g (9oz) digestive biscuits

Filling:

100g (3½oz) butter

100g (3½oz) dark brown soft sugar

397g can Carnation Condensed Milk

Topping:

4 small bananas

300ml carton double cream, lightly whipped

grated chocolate

You will also need:

20cm (8”) loose-bottomed cake tin, greased

Method

To make the base, process the biscuits until crushed. Stir in the melted butter. Press the mixture into the base and 4cm (1½") up the sides of the tin. Chill the base while you make the filling.

To make the filling: place the butter and sugar into a non-stick saucepan over a low heat, stirring until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves. Add the condensed milk and bring gently to the boil, stirring continuously. When the caramel has started to boil, remove from the heat and pour over the biscuit base. Cool, and then leave to chill for about 1 hour, until firm.

To serve, remove the pie from the tin and place on a serving plate. Slice the bananas, fold half of them into the softly whipped cream and spoon over the caramel base. Decorate with the remaining bananas and finish with the grated chocolate.

Libraries of the world: Saxon State Library

This is the main reading room in the Saxon state library. The room is underground and the clear roof is at grass level.

The Saxon State Library (Sächsische Landesbibliothek) in Dresden is the Staatsbibliothek of Saxony and the academic library of the Technische Universität Dresden. It is one of the main public archival centers of Germany. Its treasures,collected over four centuries, were located in the Japanisches Palais and in temporary archives for a long period of time. Since 2002 it is located in a new building merged to the Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und-Universitätsbibliothek Dresden.

From 1485, the city of Dresden was the seat of the Wettin dukes of Saxony, who from 1547 were prince-electors. The library was founded in 1556, when Prince-Elector Augustus (ruled 1553-1586) started systematically to acquire learned books and literary works. The prince himself inspected the lists of books offered at the book fair in Leipzig, the largest and most important city in his state, whose library had received the contents of the religious houses dissolved at the Reformation. Further, he instructed his diplomats to buy rare and precious books abroad. During the first half of the eighteenth century, under two rulers, Augustus the Strong (ruled 1694-1733) and his son, Augustus II (ruled 1733-1763), Dresden became a major European cultural center. The Court Library became a true state library for Saxony, absorbing many manuscripts, maps, and books from distinguished private collections, with some spectacular purchases, such as the Mayan codex (purchased 1736). In 1727, the Library moved into two wings of the Zwinger Palace. When Frederick the Great of Prussia bombarded Dresden in 1760, some of the library burned: there are singed volumes in the collection to this day. By the end of the eighteenth century it had outgrown its wing of the Zwinger, and it then moved to the Japanese Palace. In 1788 the Saxon Library was opened to the public. Following the proclamation of the Weimar Republic in 1919, it officially became the Saxon State Library, with its strengths continuing to lie in the arts, humanities, social sciences, literature and linguistics.

With the onset of World War II, the most precious holdings of the State Library were dispersed to eighteen castles and offices apart from any possible military objectives. Consequently, they largely survived the bombing raids of February and March 1945 by the British and American Air Forces, which destroyed the former library buildings and virtually the whole historic center of Dresden. The bombing caused losses of about 200,000 volumes of twentieth-century manuscript and printed holdings and also some irreplaceable musical manuscripts, including the major corpusof Tomaso Albinoni's unpublished music, though Georg Philipp Telemann's manuscripts were preserved (catalogued, 1983). After the war, some 250,000 books were taken to Russia. A merger with the University Library of the Technische Universität Dresden in 1996 spurred the development of new permanent structures to house the combined libraries,which had been scattered among almost three dozen locations throughout the city. The move to the new stone-clad facilities designed by Ortner & Ortner was completed in 2002. With more than 7 million pieces the fused library is one of the biggest libraries in Europe. The library hosts the Deutsche Fotothek.

Beef Nachos

Serves 4

2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely diced 500g beef mince  2 x 400g cans whole tomatoes  2 tbsp tomato paste  ¼ tsp chilli powder  Salt and freshly ground black pepper  Small packet corn chips  ½ cup grated cheddar or edam cheese ¼ cup lite sour cream Sprigs of parsley, to garnish

1. Heat a saucepan, add oil and onion, and cook over a medium heat for 5 to 8 minutes until softened. Add mince and cook for 5 minutes, breaking up the mince with a wooden spoon.

2. Coarsely chop canned tomatoes and add to the pan. Add tomato paste and simmer for 5 minutes. Add chilli powder and season with salt and pepper to taste.

3. Spoon mince mixture onto four plates and surround with corn chips. Serve topped with grated cheese and a dollop of sour cream. Garnish with parsley, if desired.

Glazed Meat Loaf

Prep Time: 10 Min Cook Time: 1 Hr 10 Min

Original Recipe Yield 6 servings

Ingredients

1/2 cup tomato sauce

1/3 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup lemon juice, divided

1 teaspoon mustard powder

1 kilo ground beef

3 slices bread, broken up into small pieces

1/4 cup chopped onion

1 egg, beaten

1 teaspoon beef stock or use 1 Oxo cube (broken up)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
In a small bowl, combine the tomato sauce, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon lemon juice and mustard powder.
In a separate large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread, onion, egg, Oxo cube or beef stock, remaining lemon juice and 1/3 of the tomato sauce mixture from the small bowl. Mix this well and place in a 5x9 inch loaf pan.
Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 1 hour, drain any excess fat, coat with remaining tomato sauce mixture and bake for 10 more minutes.
Very easy and cheap to make and yummy as well!!

Libraries of the World: Admont Abbey

Admont Abbey (Stift Admont)

is a foundation of the Benedictines on the River Enns in the town of Admont in Austria and is the oldest remaining monastery in Styria. It contains the largest monastic library in the world and a long-established scientific collection, and is known for its Baroque architecture and collections of art and manuscripts.

The abbey's location on the borders of the mountainous Gesäuse National Park (the name Admont derives from the Latin expression "ad montes," "at the mountains") is of unusual scenic beauty.

Dedicated to Saint Blaise, Admont Abbey was founded in 1074 by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg with the legacy of the late Saint Hemma of Gurk, and settled by monks from St. Peter's Abbey in Salzburg under abbot Isingrin.

The second abbot, Giselbert, is said to have introduced the Cluniac reforms here. Another of the early abbots, Wolfhold, established a convent for the education of girls of noble family, and the educational tradition has remained strong ever since. The monastery prospered during the Middle Ages and possessed a productive scriptorium. Abbot Engelbert of Admont (1297–1327) was a famous scholar and author of many works.

With the Counter-Reformation the abbey flourished. In addition to the secondary school, which later moved to Judenburg, there were faculties of theology and philosophy. Abbot Albert von Muchar was well-known as an historian and taught at the University of Graz.

In the 17th and 18th centuries the abbey reached a high point of artistic productivity, with the works of the world-famous ecclesiastical embroiderer Brother Benno Haan (1631–1720) and the sculptor Joseph Stammel (1695–1765).

On April 27, 1865 a disastrous fire destroyed almost the entire monastery. While the monastic archives burned, the library could be salvaged. Reconstruction began the following year but was still not complete by 1890.[1]

The economic crises of the 1930s forced the abbey to sell off many of its art treasures, and during the period of the National Socialist government the monastery was dissolved and the monks evicted. They were able to return in 1946 and the abbey today is again a thriving Benedictine community.

From 1641 the abbey was a member of the Salzburg Congregation, which in 1930 was merged into the present Austrian Congregation of the Benedictine Confederation.

Present day

The community at Admont consists of over 30 monks under Abbot Bruno Hubl. The abbey is responsible for 27 parishes, runs a secondary school with about 600 pupils and an old people's home in Frauenberg. Its various businesses and enterprises employ about 500 people, and it also has the management of the museums and collections detailed below.

 Library

The library hall, built in 1776 to designs by the architect Joseph Hueber, is 70 metres long, 14 metres wide and 13 metres high, and is the largest monastery library in the world.

It contains c. 70,000 volumes of the monastery's entire holdings of c. 200,000 volumes. The ceiling consists of seven cupolas, decorated with frescoes by Bartolomeo Altomonte showing the stages of human knowledge up to the high point of Divine Revelation.

Light is provided by 48 windows and is reflected by the original colour scheme of gold and white. The architecture and design express the ideals of the Enlightenment, against which the sculptures by Joseph Stammel of "The Four Last Things" make a striking contrast.

The abbey possesses over 1,400 manuscripts, the oldest of which, from St. Peter's Abbey in Salzburg, were the gift of the founder, Archbishop Gebhard, and accompanied the first monks to settle here, as well as over 900

Natural History Museum

Father Strobl was a botanist but also worked on building up the insect collection, so much so that he became one the great entomologists of his day. The Natural History museum now contains over 250,000 insect specimens, including one of the three largest collections of flies, or Diptera, in Europe. Other collections of, for example, minerals and rock, and exotic species, have also been formed.

Art museum

The abbey also houses two major art collections of Historical and Modern Art. The historical art collection was begun in 1959 by Father Adalbert Krause, and has been significantly augmented since 1980. The present museum was opened in 2003. The collection particularly features ecclesiastical art, and contains for example many works of ecclesiastical embroidery by the famous craftsman Benno Haan and of the abbey sculptor Joseph Stammel.

Since 1997 the abbey has also been building up a collection of contemporary art, largely produced by young Austrian artists and often specially designed for the abbey premises.

Pork (Grilled): Spanish pinchos morunos (kebabs)

The name of this popular Spanish tapas dish translates roughly to "Moorish Kebabs" and refers to pork with a Moorish spice marinade. The Moors ruled Spain from 711 until 1492, and their influence is still felt in Spanish cuisine, architecture, and many other aspects of Spanish society. Being Muslim, the Moors would never have eaten pork, but the Spanish love pork and the flavor of this dish is unmistakably Moorish/Moroccan/North African in origin (although some have suggested that the dish actually came to Spain in the 19th or 20th century via North African immigrants rather than centuries earlier under Moorish rule).

Prep Time:

- Marinate: 2 Hours

- Active: 30 Minutes

Ingredients:

1 ½ lb. Pork (boneless), cut into 1" cubes

¼ c. Olive oil

¼ c. Lemon juice, or vinegar and/or wine

2 tbsp. Minced garlic

1 tbsp. Smoked paprika, and/or paprika or cayenne pepper

1 tbsp. Ground cumin, or up to 3 tbsp

2 tsp. Dried oregano, and/or thyme

1 tsp. Ground coriander

1 tsp. Ground turmeric, optional

Salt/Pepper to taste

2-4 tbsp. Chopped fresh parsley

Directions:

• Combine marinade ingredients (everything but the pork and parsley) in a bowl that is big enough to hold all of the pork pieces.

• Place the pork pieces in a bowl and rub with the spice mixture. Cover and refrigerate overnight for best results (although as little as 2-4 hours will taste very good), turning occasionally.

• Preheat grill, or a cast-iron grill pan, over medium-high heat. Bring meat to room temperature before grilling.

• Thread the meat onto skewers. (Can optionally alternate on the skewers with cherry tomatoes, chunks of red or green bell pepper, green grapes, or other fruits.)

• Grill, turning occasionally, 6-8 minutes or until just cooked through. Be careful not to overcook; pork tends to dry out very quickly, especially in the heat of the grill (and especially when it hasn't been marinated long enough).

• This dish is usually served plain as a tapas dish, without any dip or sauce.

Please Note: These are very easy to make, you can use chicken rather than pork, and they can be cooked on the BBQ.

The Seattle Central Library is the flagship library of the Seattle Public Library system. The 11-story (185 feet or 56 meters high) glass and steel building in downtown Seattle, Washington was opened to the public on Sunday, May 23, 2004. Rem Koolhaas and Joshua Prince-Ramus of OMA/LMN were the principal architects and Hoffman Construction Company of Portland, Oregon, was the general contractor. The 362,987 square foot (34,000 m²) public library can hold about 1.45 million books and other materials, features underground public parking for 143 vehicles, and includes over 400 computers open to the public. Over 2 million individuals visited the new library in its first year. It is the third Seattle Central Library building to be located on the same site at 1000 Fourth Avenue, the block bounded by Fourth and Fifth Avenues and Madison and Spring Streets. The library has a unique, striking appearance, consisting of several discrete "floating platforms" seemingly wrapped in a large steel net around glass skin. Architectural tours of the building began on June 5, 2006.

In 2007, the building was voted #108 on the American Institute of Architects' list of Americans' 150 favorite structures in the US.[1] It was one of two Seattle buildings included on the list of 150 structures, the other being Safeco Field

Although the library is an unusual shape from the outside, the architects' philosophy was to let the building's required functions dictate what it should look like, rather than imposing a structure and making the functions conform to that.

For example, a major section of the building is the "Books Spiral," (designed to display the library's nonfiction collection without breaking up the Dewey Decimal System classification onto different floors or sections). The collection spirals up through four stories on a continuous series of shelves. This allows patrons to peruse the entire collection without using stairs or traveling to a different part of the building.

Other internal features include; the Microsoft Auditorium on the ground floor, the "Living Room" on the third floor (designed as a space for patrons to read), the Charles Simonyi Mixing Chamber (a version of a reference desk that provides interdisciplinary staff help for patrons who want to have questions answered or do research), and the Betty Jane Narver Reading Room on level 10 (with views of Elliott Bay).

New functions include automatic book sorting and conveyance, self-checkout for patrons, pervasive wireless communications among the library staff, and over 400 public computer terminals.

The Abbey of Saint Gall (German: Fürstabtei Sankt Gallen) is a religious complex in the city of St. Gallen in present-day Switzerland. The Carolingian era Abbey has existed since 719 and became an independent principality during the 13th century, and was for many centuries one of the chief Benedictine abbeys in Europe. It was founded by Saint Othmar on the spot where Saint Gall had erected his Hermitage.

The Abbey library is recognised as one of the richest medieval libraries in the world. It is home to one of the most comprehensive collections of early medieval books in the German-speaking part of Europe. As of 2005, the library consists of over 160,000 books, of which 2100 are handwritten. Nearly half of the handwritten books are from the Middle Ages and 400 are over 1000 years old. Since 1983, it has been an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This weeks recipe is:

MACARONI CHEESE

Ingredients:

3 cups macaroni
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan (optional, you can just add more cheddar if you want)
2/3 cup thin cream or evaporated low fat milk or normal milk
1 teaspoon salt

Method:

Cook macaroni according to the instructions on the packet. It will take 6-10 minutes.
When al dente (still slightly firm), drain macaroni and return to pot.
Add cheese, cream or milk and salt to the macaroni and stir over a low heat until cheese has melted and the sauce has thickened.

Pip: the Story of Olive

A new book to our senior fiction section, Pip: the Story of Olive is a clever and sophisticated book. Don't be fooled by the very young, light-hearted cover! The author, Kim Kane, gives us an insight (maybe flashbacks...) of what it is like to be a 12 year old girl at intermediate level school.

Did I enjoy this story? Yes, it could be humorous and sad in parts too, all at the same time. Almost like being on the outside of a crowd looking in...

Overdue Books

Let's pretend that the little person in this picture is bringing all his overdue books back...

As of today (Friday 1st April) we still have 75 books that were due back before the 21st March. The total of books in circulation (overdue and current) is 670. Letters will be sent home today- see Mrs Pryor/Mrs Smith if you have a problem.

Last day for issuing this term is Wednesday 6th April. Our returns competition starts on Monday 11th - 13th. Maybe your class will win!

Today Mrs Smith has put a note in the daysheet about lego creations... If you would like them displayed in the library, we would LOVE you to bring them along. We have a lockable cabinet in our library - so they will be safe in there!

Maybe we are imagining this - but do girls like LEGO? I don't think they do! Are we wrong?

Are your dreams just like a movie? Just like being in the cinema? Put your ideas on paper (or computer -of course!) and enter into the New Zealand Post Children's Book Awards. Here are some guidelines and rules at a glance:

The competition is open to Y1 -8
The entry must be a story, poem or piece of creative writing- no longer than 300 words
Entries may be hand written or typed- but easily readable
You can enter as many times as you like- one entry form per story entered
Entries must be delivered, postmarked or uploaded no later than 30th April 2011

Our day for grandparents and great grandparents will be Friday 10th December. This is a special day in the year for Opaheke School and is a highlight for the children. ‘Adopted’ grandparents are welcome too, especially for the child who has no living grandparents, or grandparents who live too far away to be able to

attend.

I'm sure you will love the day- make sure you visit the library as well. It will be decorated for Xmas and there will be an opportunity to 'donate a book' from our annual book fair. If your grandparent would like to donate a book to the library, a donation certificate is put inside with the student name and family inside.

Make sure you show them our wonderful projector system as well!

Who loves Horses?

I know that lots of girls love horses. I must get at least 5 requests per day for horse books. Well, I have been listening! We have to new books: Dressage and Cross-Country and Endurance. They are beautifully illustrated with a lot of information stashed inside- such as: care and handling, training, equipment, events, obstacles, superstars. They are on display and ready for issue.

Farmer Beetroot's Birthday- a neat story about a birthday party that doesn't go quite according to plan! Fabulous illustrations. I think we will read this on Friday at lunchtime (if it's not raining).

We have a new series of books called 'Festivals & Faiths' . They will be on display in the library and then their home will be in 394 Non Fiction (Social Science)area.

Well we have nice weather don't we- that is a good start. Daylight saving has started too. I love this time of year- how about you? It isn't so great if you are very young and have to go to bed with the daylight but it is great for your parents! I tell that to my kids too but they like to stay up later than me : (

So, on with the library stuff! We have some great new books on the way. (I'm processing a few of them now -at school. You would be amazed at what can be achieved in a library without children in it)

Watch out for these books- especially my younger students. The Fancy Nancy series are colourful, a great little story and there is a glossary at the back (of course!) to explain words that might be a bit hard. The other set is National Geographic. These are a wonderful addition to the library- watch out for these too.

Enjoy the rest of the holidays but keep looking for lost/overdue books.

Would you like to try writing a book review? If you are interested in doing this contact Mrs Pryor or Mrs Smith and we can work towards publishing them on this blog! We have one book review underway already, from a Y3 student!

Often, a review gives a very brief outline of the story but the most interesting part of the review can be why you liked the book. Have a go at writing a review of your favourite book - maybe it could be the start of a future career...

Hi there

We've been a bit quiet the last couple of weeks! During that time we have completed the installation of the library projector, found some interesting e-book sites AND ordered some new books. We have started to process the books but they won't be ready for issue for another 2 weeks. After you have eaten your lunch come along and listen to the school librarians read a cool story. Most of the stories they read are picture books but often they also read chapter books such as Zac Power. See you there!

Thanks to all the children who supported our book sale. The books that are usually on sale are books culled (weeded) from the library. Often, these books have been well-loved and are looking very tattered, a few books are hardly issued at all over a 10 year period, while others are no longer relevant. (the information in them is out dated) e.g. computer science.

The money raised from the book sales are used to fund our competitions.

Good morning everyone

Our Term 1 returns competition starts tomorrow. We have 2 competitions running now- NE - Y5 and Y6 - Y8. Both of these competitions will have a 1st and 2nd prize to be won- trophies too for 1st place.

See if your class can get into an easy rhythm of bringing books back on your library day.

Also we have very cheap books onsale in the arts room on Friday, 12 o'clock.

Friday reading will still be on in the library so come along - it's 'piggy week' this week, so a piggy theme. Don't ask me why- our lovely librarians decided on this. Should be good.

Hi Everyone

The family and I went to see Alice in Wonderland. If you haven't seen the movie - it is very good (aside from the 3d effect)There have been mixed reviews - but you can't please everyone! . Mrs Smith and I have printed off a few posters of the movie but also have poetry from the original Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The book will be on display in the library!
